I had no idea that Dilbert got it's own animated series back in 1999, which lasted two seasons. I found it by accident, and inmediately I wanted to see more. Granted, I don't read the Dilbert comic strip, but I might want to now I've seen the animated series.

I can't say that Dilbert is now my all-time favorite show, but I'm certainly not dissapointed. The premise is pretty much self-explanatory: the show is basically about a nerdy middle-aged engineer who works in a big office. The show probably appeals to me because I can somewhat relate to this man: he's a rational scientist, probably an atheist, technology is his life and he's single. He takes it a step further though, and it's not even a bad thing, because it makes him an interesting character. Looking at his lifestyle, I could say that he's pretty succesful too.

I really had to get used to the fact that Dilbert's house is inhibited by a bunch of talking animals. In the first instance, I found that a bit disturbing, a bit childish if you will. In some extent, I still feel that way, especially about a rat person called Ratbert, he's so CONE DAMNED USELESS! The guy is not funny, or clever, or remotely useful. He just takes up valuable television time. On the other hand, there's Dogbert, who is significantly funnier, wittier, and almost takes the spot of main character. Dogbert posesses an insane amount of knowledge, wit and intelligence, and he's able to do ANYTHING. Lines like "I'm already perfect, so I don't need any help" might explain his attitude.

One might say that a show about office life might get stale after a while. In Dilbert, the office evionment is just a cover up. Entire episodes are situated in places that are not even remotely associated with any office.

Dilbert is a very interesting show, and it's a shame it never made it's way to broadcast companies in my area. I think this show could do a great job competing the many sitcoms that air around the 19:00 timeslot (pre-primetime). Animation wise, it's typically a show for such purposes, because animation isn't it's strongest asset. It has that typical animated sitcom feel. Lot's of talking, occasional movements, and some weird antics here and there.

A little downer is how sometimes, the jokes seem a little fragmented, and it sometimes feels like they used the comic strips for the script. Often I see situation when characters make three-step comments that lead to the punchline, a formula like "remark-reply-PUNCHLINE!", something we see in many strips.

Score: 7.8/10.0
Dilbert is something you'll probably don't like, or like. There's no hate or love. You can't hate it, unless you're one of those religious fundalmentalists who's apalled by Dilbert's support of the evolution theory. You can't love it because it's lacking in certain areas. Like I said, it's typical pre-primetime material. I won't even recommend it, unless you catch it on TV sometime, then you might want to stick around for a while.
