It's not coincidental when you've seen the previous Mission Impossible movies. They're fairly popular and full of action. Mission Impossible 3 is that and slightly more. The unique aspect of the Mission Impossible movies is that the missions seem, well, impossible to accomplish, but are anyway, somehow.

I saw Mission Impossible 2 when it was in theaters and that was about 7 years ago. Seeing this one, I could say it's somewhat better, but almost identical to its precessor. Was it some kind of super lethal chemical substance in the previous movie, now it's a substance needed for a super weapon that can destroy everything on this planet, called the "Rabbit foot". To add some drama, the protagonist's wife is being kidnapped as well. Teh drama!

The movie is exciting to watch, especially in theaters, but it doesn't have any substance to become memorable. The only remarkable thing is the opening scene that shows (part of) the ending. From that point you will assume that some clever twist will alter that ending, but you also won't rule out that this just might be it. I think it's a bad move, because it puts the focus on that ending, and not the movie. The scene would be much more exciting if they only showed the ending at the end, where it should be. This trick does not serve a purpose and should’ve been left out.

It doesn't matter much though. When you look at the general structure of the movie, it's basically a guy-saves-damsel-in-distress flic, with an international techno-thriller sub-plot. It'll blow you off your seat, but it leaves you empty and not enlightened. They also toss in a few references to terrorism, which makes it look like a poor attempt at anti-terrorism propaganda as well.

Even though the plot is as thin as a standard issue DVD, it must be noted that the visual aspect of the movie is well done and certainly entertaining. But hey, what do you expect, it's an action flic. We have lots of explosions, helicopters flying through wind-mill turbines, jet fighters attacking people on a bridge and Tom Cruise jumping from sky scraper to sky scraper. We see our heroes travel to Germany, Italy, Vatican City and China... and the United States of course. It are elements that certainly make up for the lack of plot.

Score: 6.9/10
I just can't give this movie anything higher than a 7.0/10, it's exciting, the gadgets are cool and it's got a fast pace. It just doesn't go beyond that, and it just becomes a generic action flic. Go see this movie if you and a bunch of friends want to kill some time at the mall. The girls will like to see Tom Cruise with his big puppy eyes, and the guys... well, there's explosions in it.
